Day 16: God Is True, He Cannot Lie
The Doctrine of God: Days 2-28
Scripture
“God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should change his mind. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it?” Numbers 23:19 ESV
“So that by two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us.” Hebrews 6:18 ESV

Confessional Summary
Westminster calls the Lord “most true” (Westminster Confession of Faith 2.1). The Shorter Catechism says God is “unchangeable” in His being and perfections (Westminster Shorter Catechism 4), and the Larger Catechism repeats that God is “most true” (Westminster Larger Catechism 7). Belgic agrees, confessing God as “true” (Belgic Confession, Article 1).
Put simply, God’s truthfulness is not a mood and not a phase. His promises are as steady as His character, because it is impossible for Him to lie.

Reflection
Every human relationship carries some uncertainty. Even the best people can misspeak, forget, exaggerate, or change course. God is not man, that He should lie. His words are not spin but reality.
Numbers 23:19 presses the point with questions that leave no escape. Has He said, and will He not do it. Has He spoken, and will He not fulfill it. God does not speak and then revise. He does not promise and then need an excuse.
Hebrews 6 calls it impossible for God to lie, and the goal is not speculation. The goal is “strong encouragement.” When your conscience accuses, when your feelings swing, when your circumstances preach despair, God’s promises remain steady because He remains steady.
Faith is not a leap into the dark. Faith is reliance on the most certain voice in existence. The instability is not in God’s word. It is in us.

Application
Choose one promise of God you have treated like a nice thought instead of a firm foundation. Say it aloud slowly, pray it back to Him, and act on it today. Then name one way you have accused God of failing you when the real issue has been impatience, selective hearing, or refusal to obey what He has already made clear.
Prayer
God of truth, forgive my doubts and my selective listening. Make me steady by Your promises and shape my speech to match Your character. Teach me to trust what You have said and to live like Your word is reality. Amen.
