Day 18: God Is Unchanging, Your Anchor
The Doctrine of God: Days 2-28
Scripture
“For I the LORD do not change; therefore you, O children of Jacob, are not consumed.” Malachi 3:6 ESV
“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” Hebrews 13:8 ESV
“For I the LORD do not change; therefore you, O children of Jacob, are not consumed.” Malachi 3:6 ESV
“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” Hebrews 13:8 ESV
Confessional Summary
Westminster confesses that God is “immutable” (Westminster Confession of Faith 2.1). The Shorter Catechism and the Larger Catechism say God is “infinite, eternal, and unchangeable” in His being and perfections (Westminster Shorter Catechism 4; Westminster Larger Catechism 7). The Belgic Confession confesses the same God as “immutable” (Belgic Confession, Article 1).
The Reformers believed God never becomes a different God, so His promises remain as constant as His character.

Reflection
Malachi gives a reason you are still here. God declares, “I the LORD do not change,” and then he draws the conclusion, “therefore you, O children of Jacob, are not consumed.” That is not abstract theology. It is covenant restraint. If God treated His people according to their fluctuations, their repeated wandering, their mixed motives, they would not survive His holiness. But the Lord does not drift. His commitment does not cool. His patience does not run thin. His promises remain as constant as His character.
That statement also exposes what we quietly assume. We tend to treat God like a person whose tone could change overnight, whose favor could dwindle, whose heart could harden. Malachi says the opposite. The Lord does not drift. The Lord does not sour. The Lord does not become less Himself.
Hebrews 13:8 presses this into the person of Christ. The Jesus who welcomed sinners, confronted hypocrites, carried weak disciples, and finished His saving work is the same Jesus now. When you come to Him again, you are not meeting a new Christ. You are meeting the same Lord.
So when your life feels unstable, do not look first to your ability to stabilize it. Look to the God who does not change, and to the Savior who remains the same.

Application
When you feel shaken today, reset your bearings. Say Malachi 3:6 aloud, slowly. Let God’s steadiness be your reference point while everything else moves. The Lord does not change. Christ is the same. Sit with that for one minute, then press forward in faith.
Prayer
Unchanging Lord, keep me from treating You like a variable. Thank You that Your mercy holds, and that Christ remains the same. Make me faithful because You are faithful. Amen.
