Spotting Grace

What if the most countercultural thing we could do in a world obsessed with self-promotion is to become experts at recognizing and celebrating others? That is exactly the challenge Paul lays before us in Romans 12:10-16, where he calls us to outdo one another in showing honor. This message draws us into a compelling vision of Christian community where we train our eyes to spot grace at work in the people around us. Just as a seasoned hunter learns to notice the faint outline of a deer in the tree line, we are called to develop a sharpened awareness for the quiet faithfulness, unseen sacrifice, and steady service happening all around us. The spiritual lesson here is profound: honor is not flattery or vague praise, it is the specific, intentional act of naming what is true and good in another person. When we do that, we are not just being polite, we are reflecting the gospel itself. Because Christ has already honored us beyond anything we could earn or deserve, we are freed from the exhausting need to secure our own recognition. Our worth is settled in him, and from that place of security we can give the gift of honor freely and generously to others.
